Since the early days of the Hudson's Bay trading forts in Western Canada, the unmistakable music of the GREAT HIGHLAND BAGPIPE has been one of the many sounds that has ushered progress in the Province of Alberta!
Pipe bands, by their very nature are cyclical and fluid. People come and go, some are innovators who leave their indelible mark, others are simply players who have taken up the playing of pipes to satiate the last wishes of their great aunt Gormelia (who once said..."You will play the pipes or you will not be in the will!") Others are moved by the sound of the pipes at some impressionable point in their lives and others join the military and discover pipe music has been used for centuries to motivate troops to march on to victory.
Some just fade into obscurity.
We would like to celebrate ALL the pipers, drummers and bands that have long been part of the fabric of Alberta's history. This website is dedicated to the influencers, the innovators, the natural players, the unnatural players....and those who kept their promise to great Aunt Gormelia!
