    BAND HISTORY

    Al Azhar Pipes & Drums

The Pipes and Drums were originally formed under the name of the Pipe Band in 1969. In addition to performing bandsman, the members undertook responsibilities to assist with degree work in both the Canadian and York Rites. The band still carries on degree work on a regular basis. One of our members, Noble Norman Maciver went on to become Most Worshipful Grand Master in Alberta and he is still active with the Pipe Band as an Elder.

The Pipe Band has performed at the opening of Fort Edmonton in 1974, Edmonton City Hall opening in 1974, the Commonwealth Games in Edmonton 1978, the University Games in Edmonton 1983 and the Special Olympic Games in Edmonton 1988.

The Band performs an average of ten moveouts annually, covering a wide range of communities throughout the Province. Recruits to the Band are welcome with or without experience.
